The highly anticipated public voting for New Zealand’s Favourite Sporting Moment at the 62nd ISPS Handa Halberg Awards is now open. This year’s finalists capture the passion, pride, and perseverance of Kiwi sports fans, highlighting a range of achievements from thrilling World Cup victories to extraordinary feats at the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The top 10 sporting moments for 2024 are as follows:

  1. Anna Grimaldi – Overcame disappointment in long jump to win New Zealand’s sole gold at the Paris 2024 Paralympics in the 200m T47 event.
  2. BLACKCAPS – Made history by becoming the first team to win a three-match Test series 3-0 against India, on Indian soil.
  3. Brooke Francis and Lucy Spoors – Shared an emotional post-race moment, embracing their children after securing Olympic gold in the women’s double sculls.
  4. Ellesse Andrews – Celebrated her Keirin win with her coach-father Jon at the Paris Olympics.
  5. Finn Butcher – Paid an emotional tribute to his late father after winning Olympic gold in Kayak Cross.
  6. Hamish Kerr – Celebrated clearing the winning jump in a dramatic Olympic high jump final, securing gold.
  7. Hayden Wilde – Displayed exceptional sportsmanship by embracing his rival Alex Yee after winning silver at the Paris Olympics.
  8. Dame Lydia Ko – Achieved a career-defining gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics, completing her historic collection of Olympic medals.

New Zealanders are encouraged to cast their vote once a day to help crown the nation’s favorite sporting moment. Voting is open now and will close at 8:15pm on Tuesday, 18 February 2025. The winner will be announced live at the ISPS Handa Halberg Awards shortly after.

Winners of the 62nd ISPS Handa Halberg Awards

Dame Lydia Ko – Crowned the supreme athlete for her exceptional performance in golf throughout the year, solidifying her status as a sporting icon.

Hamish Kerr – Named Sportsman of the Year for his historic achievements in high jump, including winning New Zealand’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in the men’s high jump at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Anna Grimaldi – Received the Para Athlete/Para Team of the Year award for her remarkable performance at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, winning gold in the Women’s 200m T47 and setting a new Oceania record.
