The United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization (C-24) is set to convene a high-level Pacific Regional Seminar in Dili, Timor-Leste, from May 21 to 23, 2025, reinforcing global efforts toward self-governance and sustainable development for Non-Self-Governing Territories.
The seminar will welcome UN Member States, administering powers, representatives from territories, civil society leaders, and policy experts to discuss strategies for economic and social growth. Special focus will be placed on education, infrastructure, environmental protection, and cultural preservation, ensuring territories develop strong governance frameworks for long-term stability.
Presiding over the discussions is Ambassador Menissa Rambally of Saint Lucia, Chair of the Special Committee on Decolonization, alongside representatives from administering nations including the United Kingdom, France, and the United States. Territories involved in the dialogue include New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Guam, and the Pitcairn Islands, among others.
Following the seminar, the Committee (C-24) will assess key takeaways during its June session, formulating recommendations for presentation at the United Nations General Assembly.
The event serves as a crucial milestone in the Fourth International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism (2021-2030), reinforcing the UN’s ongoing mission to support territorial autonomy, human rights, and international cooperation.
As discussions unfold, global leaders remain optimistic about strengthening partnerships and facilitating self-determined governance for territories still seeking full sovereignty.
