A global coalition will address the global cyber skills shortage and improve security expertise worldwide.
Companies developing AI, from consumer apps to systems supporting public services, can better defend against rising cyber security threats with measures introduced by the UK government.
The new Code of Practice announced today will provide businesses and public services the assurance they need to safely leverage AI’s transformative capabilities. This supports the government’s Plan for Change by enhancing public services, boosting productivity, and driving economic growth.
With cyber-attacks or breaches impacting half of businesses in the past year, it is essential to protect AI systems as their adoption accelerates. The UK’s pioneering Code of Practice provides organizations with the tools to excel in the AI era. From safeguarding AI systems against hacking and sabotage to ensuring secure development and deployment, this Code will help developers create secure and innovative AI products that drive growth and advance the Plan for Change.
The guidelines outline how organizations utilizing AI can shield themselves from various cyber threats, such as AI-driven attacks and system failures. Measures include:
- Implementing cyber security training focused on AI vulnerabilities.
- Developing recovery plans for potential cyber incidents.
- Conducting thorough risk assessments.
This voluntary Code of Practice aims to establish a new global standard for secure AI through the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), solidifying the UK’s reputation as a pioneer in safe innovation. Last year, the UK AI sector generated £14.2 billion in revenue. These standards will help sustain growth while safeguarding critical infrastructure, complementing the efforts of the AI Opportunities Action Plan.
Minister for Cyber Security, Feryal Clark MP, commented:
“The UK is at the forefront of establishing global standards for secure innovation, making certain that AI development and deployment occur in an environment that safeguards critical systems and data, which are vital to implementing our Plan for Change.
This initiative will not only provide businesses with enhanced security confidence, allowing them to thrive, but also support them in creating advanced AI products that stimulate growth, enhance public services, and position Britain as a leader in the global AI market.”
