Digitising Government Minister Hon Judith Collins has introduced new guidelines outlining the expected approach for agencies to adopt AI while leveraging its potential to boost productivity and improve service delivery.

According to Ms. Collins, the use of AI technologies to enhance public services is a top priority, and these guidelines will facilitate the safe and responsible adoption of AI.

“AI presents a significant opportunity to increase productivity and enhance public service delivery, but it must be implemented correctly by the government,” Ms. Collins stated.

The guidelines are part of a comprehensive toolkit designed for agencies to implement AI in ways that are safe, transparent, and beneficial for New Zealanders, while maintaining the highest standards of trust and accountability.

Effective AI utilization can greatly improve customer experience and boost efficiency. It can help reduce wait times, expedite issue triaging, and allow public servants to concentrate on frontline services—resulting in better outcomes for New Zealanders and reduced government costs.

The Government Chief Digital Officer (GCDO) is spearheading the initiative to support the safe and trusted adoption of AI technology across the public service. Recently, the GCDO released the Public Service AI Framework, which complements the Responsible AI Guidance for the Public Service and outlines a structured approach for deploying all forms of AI within New Zealand’s public service.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment, the GCDO is developing similar guidelines for the business community. Government agencies are working together to support responsible AI adoption across both the public and private sectors, fostering innovation and economic growth.

Ms. Collins emphasized that as AI systems evolve rapidly, government policies, guidelines, and use cases will continue to adapt in response to these advancements and public expectations.
