National Ticketing Solution (NTS)

It’s a nationwide initiative offering various simple payment methods for all public transport across Aotearoa New Zealand.

The National Ticketing Solution (NTS) is a joint initiative between the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) and 13 Public Transport Authorities (PTAs) to introduce easy payment methods for public transport across the country.

The new system, named Motu Move, will let people pay for public transport using contactless debit or credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, a prepaid Motu Move card, or pre-bought tickets. This will make using public transport easier, encouraging more people to use it. The system will also provide better data to help improve public transport services.

Canterbury will be the first region to start using Motu Move, beginning in Timaru and Temuka in early 2025, followed by Greater Christchurch. A pilot program for debit and credit card payments will begin on the Route 29 bus in Christchurch in December 2024, before the full rollout across New Zealand.

The NTS partners include Auckland Transport, Greater Wellington Regional Council, Environment Canterbury, and a consortium of ten councils currently using the Bee Card. Key external partners are Cubic Transportation Systems, Mastercard, Activata, ASB, and OneNZ.
