Minister for Women Hon Nicola Grigg announced that New Zealand businesses can now use an online calculator to address the gender pay gap. On average, women earn 8.2% less than men, a disparity that hasn’t changed much since 2017. Reducing this gap is a top priority for Grigg.
The Gender Pay Gap Calculator toolkit is available on the Ministry for Women’s website. It helps businesses calculate and address their pay gaps.
Developed with input from major companies like Spark, ANZ, and the NZ Law Society and Tonkin + Taylor, to make sure it is user-friendly and has a common methodology. It has also been shaped and road-tested by many others across the country including Transpower, the Port of Auckland, National Advisory Council on the Employment of Women, the Diversity Agenda, Champions for Change and Global Women.
Hon Grigg emphasized the importance of this tool in helping businesses understand and reduce pay gaps, ultimately benefiting productivity.
The toolkit includes a pay gap calculator, a downloadable action plan, and guidance materials to support businesses in this process. Grigg encourages all businesses to use this tool, not to judge but to improve.
What is Gender Pay Gap?
The gender pay gap refers to the disparity in wages between men and women working in the same field. This gap can be represented either as a percentage or in monetary terms, and it can be assessed at various levels, such as within specific jobs, organizations, industries, or across the entire nation.
Why is it important to measure the gender pay gap?
Sharing your gender pay gap figures and context statements is a crucial move towards tackling gender inequality within your organization. It helps to ensure that your pay practices are fairer and more transparent.
