The Government and Auckland Council are introducing contactless payments on Auckland’s public transport network later this month. This will allow commuters to tap on and off buses, trains, and ferries using credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.
This project is funded by the NZ Transport Agency and Auckland Council as part of the transition to the nationwide National Ticketing Solution (NTS). Starting 17 November, contactless payments will make public transport more convenient, offering alternatives to HOP cards.
Transport Minister Simeon Brown and Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown highlight that this change will simplify public transport usage, reduce congestion, and align Auckland’s services with international standards. The rollout will continue to other regions, with Timaru and Christchurch next in early 2025, and further expansion by the end of 2026.
