In a firm response to recent U.S. tariffs imposed on Canadian goods, the Government of Canada has announced a series of robust countermeasures.

March 4th 2025 | Canada | Department of Finance |

The Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Finance and Intergovernmental Affairs, and the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, jointly revealed that Canada is implementing 25 per cent tariffs on a wide range of U.S. imports.

The initial phase includes a tariff package targeting $30 billion worth of goods, with plans to expand these measures to cover an estimated $155 billion in imports if necessary.

Items on the list include popular U.S. products such as orange juice, peanut butter, wine, and motorcycles. This decisive action reflects Canada’s commitment to safeguarding its industries and defending national economic interests.

To mitigate the impact on Canadian businesses, the government has introduced relief measures to support industries affected by the tariffs. These efforts aim to ensure that domestic sectors remain resilient amidst the evolving trade dispute.

The new tariffs underscore Canada’s determination to uphold principles of fairness in international trade, while also fostering collaboration to reach a resolution. As global economic dynamics continue to shift, the measures highlight the significance of maintaining balance and protecting national interests.

Official Statements

“Canada is being needlessly and unfairly targeted by these tariffs – and the U.S.’s decision leaves us with no choice but to respond to protect Canadian interests, workers and businesses. “Today, the United States has chosen to pursue a harmful course of action that threatens the prosperity of both our nations.
