In a milestone for New Zealand’s infrastructure reform, the expansion of Auckland’s Bledisloe Wharf has officially become the first project approved under the new Fast-track Approvals Act. The decision, delivered by an independent expert panel, clears the way for construction to begin as early as next month.

The approved works include a reinforced concrete wharf extension, upgrades to the Fergusson North Berth, and a new cruise terminal—designed to accommodate larger vessels and boost port efficiency. The project is expected to generate local jobs and strengthen Auckland’s role as a gateway for trade and tourism.

Introduced earlier this year, the Fast-track Approvals Act aims to streamline the consent process for major developments by replacing overlapping regulatory hurdles with a single expert-led review. With over 140 projects eligible for consideration, the Bledisloe Wharf upgrade sets the tone for what could be a transformative era in regional development.

Officials say more approvals are in the pipeline, and refinements to the legislation are already being explored to accelerate future decisions.
